Drone regulations in Cyprus

In Cyprus, all drones must be registered. The Cypriot aviation authority has meanwhile set up an online form for this purpose. We received an answer to our registration after just under three weeks.

After registering your drone, you must abide by the following rules.

Maximum flight altitude: Due to the airspace structure over Cyprus, the maximum permitted flight altitude is at 50 meters (170 feet) above ground in Cyprus. If you want to fly higher, you will need a permit for “Special Category” flights (120 meters).

Maximum horizontal distance and FPV: Drone flights must always be in direct visual contact. The maximum allowed distance is 500 meters.

Compulsory insurance: Drone insurance is only required for commercial use in Cyprus. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend the conclusion of such a policy!

Maximum take-off weight (MTOW): Up to a take-off weight of 3 kilograms, no permit must be requested from the aviation authority (Open Category). If you want to bring a copter with more weight into the air, you need a “Special Category” permission.

Distance to airports: Drones cannot fly closer than 8 kilometers to an airport. You must maintain a distance of 3 kilometers to Heliports (Helipads).

Other safe distances: In Cyprus, you should stay one kilometer away from inhabited areas (cities, settlements, villages). For objects and persons, a distance of 500 meters is to be taken into account, unless you have obtained the permission of the owner or the person concerned in advance.

Flight bans: Multicopters are not allowed to fly over archaeological sites and military installations.

Flight approval: All drones must be registered at uav@dca.mcw.gov.cy before an operation.

Time of operations: Operation of drones is allowed in Cyprus only in daylight.

Specific regulations: If you want to take photos or videos from the air, you need permission from the Ministry of Transport (click here for the application form).
To fly drones in Cyprus, you must have completed training beforehand.

Regulations for commercial pilots: Commercially motivated drone missions require a permit for flights of the “special category.” With the permission, certain conditions are granted.

Good to know: The rules mentioned here refer to the Greek Cypriot Republic. If you want to travel to the north of the island, you must follow the Turkish drone rules.
